TDCI glossary: an endorsement can expand or limit policy benefits.

East Tennessee hills and river under soft daylight, no people or text

TDCI’s Glossary of Insurance Terms defines an endorsement as a written agreement attached to a policy expanding or limiting the benefits otherwise payable under the policy. Also called a “rider.”

That means the base form is not always the last word. An attached endorsement can widen or narrow what the insurer pays relative to the benefits that would otherwise apply.

East Tennessee homeowners adding scheduled jewelry, water-backup language, or other changes — and auto customers adding or removing coverages — are usually dealing with endorsements even when the conversation uses the word “rider.”

TDCI’s definition is informational only. Whether a specific endorsement is available, priced, or appropriate for your risk is a policy-form question, not a glossary promise.

What is an endorsement in TDCI’s glossary?

A written agreement attached to a policy expanding or limiting the benefits otherwise payable under the policy.

Is a rider the same thing?

Yes. TDCI says an endorsement is also called a “rider.”

Can an endorsement reduce benefits?

TDCI’s wording includes limiting the benefits otherwise payable, not only expanding them.

Where do endorsements appear relative to the base policy?

They are attached to the policy, per TDCI’s definition.

Does TDCI list every endorsement type?

No. The glossary defines the concept; specific forms vary by insurer and line.

Where is the official wording published?

In TDCI’s Glossary of Insurance Terms under Consumer Education.

Should you keep copies of endorsements with the declarations page?

Yes — endorsements change benefits that would otherwise apply under the base policy.
