When a crash or covered comprehensive loss takes your car off the road, the repair bill is only half the problem. You still need a way to get to work. The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) glossary defines rental reimbursement coverage as “Auto insurance coverage that pays a set daily amount for a rental car if the policyholder's car is being repaired because of damage covered by the auto policy.”
| Term | TDCI glossary definition | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Rental reimbursement coverage | Pays a set daily amount for a rental car while your car is repaired for damage covered by the auto policy | Limits are usually a daily cap and a day count; your declarations page shows both |

It follows a covered repair, not every inconvenience
TDCI’s wording ties the benefit to repairs for damage the auto policy covers. If the loss is not covered, rental reimbursement generally is not either. That is why the first call after a wreck is still about liability, collision, and comprehensive — not only about a rental counter. For the difference between collision and comprehensive, see TDCI’s glossary separates collision coverage from comprehensive coverage.
Daily caps and day counts matter
TDCI describes the benefit as a “set daily amount.” Carriers usually pair that daily figure with a maximum number of days. A $40-a-day benefit that stops after 30 days will not fully fund a six-week body-shop delay. Read the declarations page before you assume the rental is open-ended.
How rental reimbursement fits with other auto coverages
- Collision and comprehensive pay to repair or total the car; rental reimbursement pays transportation while that work happens: TDCI’s glossary separates collision coverage from comprehensive coverage.
- If you still owe more than the car is worth, gap coverage is a separate question: TDCI’s glossary explains gap insurance for auto loan balances.
- A repaired car can still be worth less on resale: TDCI glossary defines diminished value after a vehicle accident.
- Know Tennessee’s minimum liability limits: Tennessee’s auto liability minimum is 25/50/25 — here is what TDCI’s Auto Insurance 101 page says.

What is rental reimbursement coverage?
TDCI defines it as auto insurance coverage that pays a set daily amount for a rental car if the policyholder's car is being repaired because of damage covered by the auto policy.
Does every auto policy include it?
Not necessarily. TDCI defines the term; whether it is on your policy depends on your forms and declarations. Ask your agent.
When does it apply?
Under TDCI’s definition, it applies while your car is repaired because of damage covered by the auto policy.
Is there a daily limit?
TDCI describes a set daily amount. Carriers usually also cap the number of days. Check your declarations page.
Does it pay if the loss is not covered?
TDCI ties the benefit to repairs for damage covered by the auto policy. Uncovered losses generally do not trigger it.
Is rental reimbursement the same as gap insurance?
No. Gap insurance addresses a loan payoff shortfall. Rental reimbursement addresses transportation while the car is repaired. See TDCI’s separate gap definition in related reading.
Is this a coverage promise?
No. This article summarizes TDCI’s glossary definition. Your policy forms control.
